Overview

About this course

Real document cases are rarely a clean signature on a clean page. They involve inks that look identical, entries added later, pages pressed with hidden writing, stamps and seals, signatures of elderly or ill writers, regional scripts, printouts, PDFs, cheques, ID documents, and paper that has been burnt, torn or soaked. This programme follows how a forensic document lab actually works, from receiving a request and planning the examination, through instrumental and comparative techniques, to wording conclusions, writing a full expert report and facing cross-examination. It ends with a final case report and a viva.

Outcomes

What you’ll be able to do

  1. 01Plan a document examination in the right order and keep case notes to laboratory quality standards.
  2. 02Use UV and infrared examination (VSC) to separate inks and reveal additions, erasures and obliterations.
  3. 03Understand ink, paper and toner analysis, line sequencing and the limits of ink dating.
  4. 04Recover indented writing with ESDA and examine rubber stamps and seals.
  5. 05Examine difficult signatures, disguised writing and handwriting in Indian scripts.
  6. 06Examine printed, typewritten and digital documents, including metadata and e-signatures.
  7. 07Check security features of currency notes, stamp papers, cheques, passports and Aadhaar QR codes.
  8. 08Handle damaged documents and write an expert report that states conclusions and limitations correctly.

02Module 2 · Video Spectral Comparator (VSC)+

Using the VSC with UV and infrared light · telling apart two inks that look the same · finding later additions, erased writing and correction fluid · reading scratched-out or covered writing · taking clear, repeatable images for court.

03Module 3 · Ink, Paper and Toner Analysis+

Testing inks with thin-layer chromatography (TLC) · how paper and printer toner are analysed in the lab · finding which of two crossing lines was written first · how forgers make documents look old, and how to catch it · why the age of ink cannot be reliably fixed.

04Module 4 · Indented Writing (ESDA), Stamps and Seals+

Using ESDA to recover writing pressed into the page below · checking whether notebook or statement pages were written in order · examining rubber stamps and seals · spotting fake, printed or scanned stamp impressions.
